DIAMOND CLARITY CHART
HOW TO SHINE BRIGHT LIKE A DIAMOND
When light hits the surface of a diamond and a stunning spectrum of color and shine is exposed, we have clarity to thank. Diamond clarity emerges as one of the Four C’s of diamonds, and since it deals with sparkle, we can also declare it one of the most essential factors in the quality of the precious stones.
The clarity of diamonds is graded on how light passes through them without interruption from an inclusion (stuff inside the diamond). Inclusions on diamonds obstruct light from bouncing cleanly between their facets, and thus detract from their brilliance.
A flaw here or there gives a diamond its character. Internal inclusions and external blemishes occur when the diamond is forming under high temperatures and pressure inside the Earth. Every diamond includes some kind of imperfection in its body. A diamond’s brilliance and a diamond’s fire are maximized with less inclusions, making very slightly included diamonds a highly sought after prize.
The diamond clarity chart was created by the Gemology Institute of America (GIA) in order to rank diamonds on their clarity based on the count, size, location, and severity of inclusions and blemishes a diamond may display.
Below is our scale of the diamond clarity chart:
A Flawless (FL) diamond shows virtually no inclusions or blemishes. They are of the most rare and highest priced on the diamond clarity scale. To be graded Internally Flawless (IF), a diamond will bear no inclusions inside its body when viewed with 10x magnification.
Very, Very Slightly Included (VVS1 and VVS2) diamonds have slight and minor scars that are hard to notice even under intense magnification.
Very Slightly Included (VS1 and VS2) diamonds have inclusions that are a little deeper in the diamond, but are still difficult to find under magnification.
At slightly included (SI1 and SI2), a diamond starts showing inclusions under less magnification but is still attractive to the naked eye.
Included (I1, I2, and I3) diamonds are blemished and included so that the unaided eye can see it. Most jewelers avoid this rank since I diamonds are fairly dull on their faces.
